India has 39% of its population as children (Census 2011) which is the largest child population in the world. An estimated 8.1 million children are out of school, majority of those belonging to the disadvantaged groups, who uncontestably constitute an ever-present pool of child labour. West Bengal is ranked 7th among the most child labour prone states of India.
Darjeeling : The Tea industry is facing with lock out, labour disputes, worker layoffs and closing of estates. This has affected the community to a large extent. Children are found in Darjeeling town, Kalimpong and Sikkim state too doing all kind of menial works. This has impacted their overall growth and development. esides Darjeeling and Kalimpong being tourist spots and proximity to different intersection points for Bhutan and other towns, it is a strategic point for bringing in and out children for child labor and trafficking. Lack of sustainable alternative livelihood options has escalated various other problems including unsafe migration, alcoholism, broken families and increase in school drop outs.
